This impressive series had two main formats: in-4° and in-8°. The former, which is a large format, started in 1889 with a series of volumes on African fishes by Boulenger, the last publication appearing in 1966.
The first volume of the smaller format series was published in 1948, the last publication of which appeared as recently as 2003. Whereas the series was in principle devoted to monographs on the Afrotropical fauna, several volumes, including the last one (vol. 291), contained a number of smaller articles.

These journal type volumes, entitled ‘Miscellanea’, replaced the Journal of African Zoology, a periodical that was started in 1911 as a private initiative by H. Schouteden, who became director of the ‘Musée du Congo Belge’ in 1927. Initially the journal was called Revue de Zoologie africaine. It changed names several times and between 1927 (vol. 17) and 1974 (vol. 88), it bore the name Revue de Zoologie et Botanique africaines. In 1987, the then editor in chief, P. Basilewski, changed it again to Revue de Zoologie africaine. H. André, the third and last editor, made it bilingual (Revue de Zoologie africaine – Journal of African Zoology) in 1988 and finally dropped the French part to give it its final title Journal of African Zoology in 1994. The journal was discontinued in 1996 after 110 volumes.

The Revue de Zoologie africaine had been an important outlet for contributions on the Afrotropical fauna, mainly from collaborators of the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA), and its discontinuation left a serious gap. The recent actualization of the RMCA publications provided an ideal opportunity to fill this gap by launching the present Journal of Afrotropical Zoology.

The Journal of Afrotropical Zoology is obviously devoted to the biology of animals living in the tropical part of Africa, including the islands with that climatic regime but excluding the area north of the Sahara. Although the divide between the Afrotropical and the Palaearctic realms is not clear-cut, it is common knowledge that it lies somewhere near the Tropic of Cancer (23°30’N), although some of the mountain areas south of it may contain Palaerctic elements and vice versa for more northern ranges. To the south, the entirety of Africa is included, although the southern tip of the continent is known to have a temperate climate. However, there is no clear zoological boundary between tropical and southern temperate and it is generally accepted that the Afrotropical realm includes all of South Africa.

Investigations using mammals merely as models or emphasizing experimental or veterinary aspects are of interest if they are of substantial relevance to mammalogists.
Insect Systematics & Evolution was founded in 1970 as Entomologica Scandinavica (hereafter ES) on the initiative of the Natural Science Research Councils of the Nordic countries. Initially, the purpose of the new journal was to accommodate research papers in entomology mainly written by Scandinavians in English, French or German and directed to the international entomological community. The intention was to strengthen the international profile of Nordic entomology, but also to make the existing national entomological journals more attractive to the members of the national entomological societies by focusing on local faunistics etc. After a decade or so, it was decided that ES should no longer publish papers dealing with ecology and faunistics, but concentrate on systematic entomology without geographical preferences. Initially, contributions from Scandinavian authors dominated the contents of ES, but this has changed significantly during the last 20 years.

In year 2000, starting with vol. 31, the name of the journal was changed to Insect Systematics & Evolution. The name change sprung from a desire to emphasize the importance of modern systematic entomology in evolutionary biology. This is reflected in the increasing number of papers published in the journal incorporating phylogenetic reconstruction from molecular as well as morphological characters. High-standard, comprehensive taxonomic revisions and monographs will continue to appear in Insect Systematics & Evolution, as well as papers applying comparative morphology, biogeography or ecological data to systematic or evolutionary problems. Traditionally, entomology in Scandinavia includes other terrestrial arthropods than insects, such as spiders (Araneae), harvestmen (Opiliones), mites (Acari), centipedes (Chilopoda), and millipedes (Diplopoda). The journal will continue to welcome contributions on all groups of insects and other terrestrial arthropods, living as well as extinct, without any geographical preference.

Articles on history of Entomology, including biographies of distinguished entomologists are also published. Historic Background: The journal Entomologia y Vectores was born in Argentina in 1994 by the altruistic efforts of two researchers: Rodolfo U. Carcavallo from Argentina and Itamar Galindez-Girón from Venezuela who turned out the journal international. With financial support of Universidad de Los Andes (Venezuela) and CiBIOM-CONICET of Argentina, number nº1 of volume nº1 of the journal was edited in February of 1994, including articles about vectors of Chagas Disease, dealing with biology, morphology and taxonomy, including the description of a new species of Triatoma. It was created with the purpose of publishing information on the arthropod vectors involved in pathologies, including aspects of taxonomy, physiology, morphology, ecology, etiology, geographic distribution, genetics, control and history of Entomology. Particular attention was given to subjects that have to do with population dynamics of pests and diseases taking into account evident climate global changes, a subject rarely considered in other journals that deal with Entomology.
